The ColorScribe 6000 Printer A product of Craig Associates International (CAI) in Milpitas, California, the CS-6000 is the worlds first full-color printer for labeling "printable" CD-R media. The Color Scribe solves the classic problem of labeling recordable CD discs. The use of paper labels can be dangerous if the heat inside the reader causes the label to lose adhesion. Using pens to label the discs can present two problems. Marking pens in which the ink has a solvent base (such as alcohol) can cause data errors and the use of a marker with a hard tip can physically damage the recordable surface. The CS-6000 printer eliminates all such problems. This printer is an excellent choice under many circumstances, such as:
Using a state-of-the-art Canon print engine, the CS6000 requires only a single pass to produce high resolution full-color text and graphics on a CD-R disc. With print times averaging less than a minute per CD, the CS6000 is a fast method of producing brilliant labels for low- to medium-volume disc production. It is one of the only CD printers on the market with true 720x720 DPI resolution, fast print times and a true black print cartridge for excellent quality. The CS6000 is available for PC-based systems. For the PC, the package includes drivers for Microsoft Windows versions 3.x through Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0. Of course, it includes the interface cable to connect the printer to the computers standard Centronics® parallel port. In addition, software templates are provided for positioning and testing of the label design before committing the output to recordable media. Cardboard templates are included to confirm final print design before committing to disc. The minimum requirement for the printer is a PC that can run Windows 3.1 and includes a standard parallel port. Additional disk space and a faster processor are desirable to ease handling of graphics generation and the graphics files that result. Costs to use the printer are quite low. A separate ink cartridge for each of the four process colors (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) results in a no-waste system. Ink cartridges are readily available at around ten dollars each and the print capacity is several hundred discs per cartridge, depending on coverage. The "printable" discs themselves are already available from all the major media manufacturers and additional companies will be providing such discs as well. Costs for the media are only a few cents higher than for the non-printable variety. |
